Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy I shot last semester, for an assignment that required us to imitate or expand upon the work of a professional photographer. The phtoographer I chose was Eric Meola, and the image was from his personal work, depicting a face painted half white, half red, with more of the face visible.

Originally, I had intended the image to depict creativity strugglling to express itself despite the monotony of everyday life. As I began painting with acrylic paint, the original concept transformed, reminding me of Greenest of Blue Days. It became not a simple statement of opposites, but moreover, how every day for me is a combination of both waking and dreaming at the same time, with the wavering lines crossing between one another.

The cracks in the paint are representative that no matter how mcuh I try to maintain the facade of 'normality' I will never be completely 'normal' as defined by the average of members of our society. The cracks, as well as areas without paint, were intended to convey that I am human, like everyone else: I am not my sleeping disorder, I am myself.


Will be in the print show at the campus gallery starting February 10th, along with works from other first year and second year students [*cough* `neom *cough*]
